Fighting Food Inflation With Ontario Angus Beef!

The last 2 ½ years have been challenging to say the least.  Now that we seem to have the pandemic behind us for the most part, inflation seems to be the next challenge.  Price increases seem to be everywhere; from fuel to food and everything in between.  This past weekend, my oldest son and I stopped at a popular sandwich chain after his soccer game and two sub sandwiches, without drinks or anything else, was $29.15! While we sat and ate, I started thinking about the rising cost of food and ways to combat this trend as a family.

Frequently cooking at home is something most of our customers already do and something I have advocated for over the years.  If you do some mental math on what you can prepare a delicious and healthy meal at home for vs the typical cost to eat out at a restaurant, I come up with a savings of 60-80% depending on the meal.  Add to that figure the increase in quality and nutrition and the choice becomes even easier.

Planning meals in these inflation era times also helps save cost and reduce food waste which in turn also saves money.  We are trying to always have some type of our Angus beef, pork or chicken thawing in the fridge so that it is ready to go for a quick meal.  A well-stocked cooler has started to accompany us to the boy’s hardball and soccer games this summer to save on drive thru stops.

From a farm and business perspective, we are also trying to fight food inflation costs by partnering up with other farmers to offer savings to our customers.  By finding other Ontario Angus beef farms that raise their beef with no hormones, antibiotics and do so in an environmentally sustainable way, we can find efficiencies that we can pass on to our customers in these challenging times.  Many of you will notice that we have only raised our prices 4% in the last 5 years while food in the grocery stores has increased 9.7% in the last year alone! Working together saves us all time and money, supports local economies, the environment and ultimately puts delicious and nutritious food on our family’s tables.
